Octopus Sculpture

Hayk Martirosyan, founder and CEO of HayMART, has long harbored a profound fascination with the natural world, particularly the animal kingdom. Among the myriad creatures that piqued his curiosity, none has captured his imagination more than the octopus. “The octopus is a magical creature,” reflects Hayk, his admiration evident. “I am drawn to its intelligence, its otherworldly structure, and the complexity with which it exists in nature. I often joke that the octopus might just be from another planet.”

Indeed, the octopus is nothing short of extraordinary. Hayk points out its remarkable neurophysiology: “An octopus has one brain in its head and another in each of its eight arms, creating a decentralized nervous system that makes it astonishingly adaptable and intelligent.” With the largest brain-to-body ratio of any invertebrate, and a brain that even surpasses those of some vertebrates, the octopus is both enigmatic and brilliant. Moreover, its biology is equally fascinating: three hearts—one to circulate blood through the body and two to pump it past the gills—and an ability to solve complex problems, camouflage, and regenerate limbs. “It is not just intelligent,” Hayk muses, “but a symbol of adaptability and resilience.”

Serendipitously, Hayk discovered that his dear friend and renowned artist, Yuroz, also shared a profound admiration for the octopus. “I remember vividly how one evening, over dinner, we began discussing the creature’s elegance and mystery,” Hayk recalls. “That conversation blossomed into the idea of creating a sculpture, a piece of art that we could keep for ourselves—something that encapsulated all of the magic of the octopus.”

Thus, the collaboration between Hayk and Yuroz began. After numerous discussions and digital renderings, Yuroz meticulously crafted the model of the sculpture, iterating through different designs. Ultimately, they settled on two sizes and three distinct finishes—each one chosen to reflect the various facets of the octopus’s beauty and otherworldliness: Gold Leaf, Polished Stainless Steel, and Brown Classic Patina.

The result is a stunning sculptural representation of the octopus, a testament to both the creature’s astonishing complexity and the artists’ vision. “Watching the idea evolve from a conversation at the dinner table into a tangible work of art was an incredible experience,” Hayk reflects. “We are incredibly proud of these sculptures and thrilled to feature them in the HayMART collection.”

The octopus sculpture is now available for viewing at the Wynn at Home store, where art and nature converge. Those interested in acquiring the piece or learning more can reach out directly at (310) 890-2114.

This project, born from a shared fascination with the natural world, is a perfect example of how art can capture the essence of the extraordinary.
